About me

Hello, my name is Gabriel Landolfi. I am a Porteño, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

I design and construct my pieces because I think art has a healing effect on those who produce it, as well as those who explore and enjoy it. I am motivated by new mediums of visual language, always searching for alternative ways to build installations, creatively resisting that which already exists or is familiar to the eye.

For me, the preservation of natural resources is vitally important, as they dictate the future of humankind. For this reason, I feel a strong sense of mission to work with discarded materials, to give them new meaning and life through my creations. My artworks are made almost entirely of materials I have found, treated and recycled myself. My passion and commitment to the natural world are also illustrated by my gardening and landscape design work, as well as my engagement with the green field industry.

I am inspired by the alternations of light effect both electronic kind and natural light, and explore both ancestral perceptions and futuristic visions of the here and now through my electronic mandalas and other electronic pieces. All of my knowledge comes together in my ideas and creations, and I generate my own language in my works.

My art involves texturizing polymers so that light transmits the message of each particular design. The constructions are very diverse, and I use solar light as well as artificial light, depending on my creative intention.

I use pre-existing material resources offered to me by cities and places in order to create, always trying to be flexible and open to the materials that surround us. I personally recycle and select all my components and plates, and 80% of my artistic materials are recycled products that have been treated and transformed by hand.

Once I have selected and recycled the material, I prepare it for drawing, then use a pointillist technique (points) to create the design. I play with different lights in order to define the piece, assembling and choosing colours which react to light.

The entire process, from the beginning until the moment of installation, is done by hand.

My pieces do not require a lit environment, they have their own light and can be programmed to harmonise or enliven the space in which they are placed. I power my installations with different voltages (110 volts-220 volts), depending on where they are mounted.  They all have an ON/OFF switch and are programmable.

When the piece is finished I test it electronically and later check its magic.

Biography

I have always been interested in design and artistic expression, and started exploring materials at a very young age. I attended a technical-industrial school, where I learned about materials, construction, industrial and automotive mechanics, electronics, graphic design, assembly, blacksmithing, welding, and more. I have also studied music, specifically Afro-American and Asian percussion. I went on to learn about making instruments with alternative materials (specialising in the repair and restoration of percussion instruments using paper maché).

To all this, I have added the study of landscaping, exterior design (micro and macro spaces), nature and the effect of green spaces. I run my own landscaping, gardening and pruning company in Buenos Aires in parallel with my artistic work.

During my years as an artist, I have worked in shows and theatres with different companies in various countries, and have created shadow puppets and explored the projection of light and shadow.

My designs have featured in numerous other projects. I have mounted exhibitions and installations in different cities in Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Hong Kong, in different scenic contexts and contemporary art shows. In addition, I have produced special events and prototypes for products and private spaces for DJs, brands, logos, etc.

Latest exhibition

My most recent installation, carried out in conjunction with the artist El Magico, is called ‘AZENDIENDO in the break of darkness’ (‘AZENDIENDO en el asueto de la oscuridad’). It was mounted at the Arteme gallery on the occasion of Gallery Nights Buenos Aires 2016. It was a great success and exceeded my expectations.

We captured new, multidimensional facets of reality, breaking with old schemas and transforming spaces with textures, fugues/flights, electronic art, musical fusion, body painting, and fragrances to achieve a unique, memorable atmosphere.
